The Short Answer

Why does my home need a wiring evaluation instead of just replacing everything?

Home Wiring and Rewiring

Not every wiring concern calls for a full rewire. Some require a targeted repair at a specific connection point. Others require replacing the conductors on a single circuit. And some need an evaluation to determine exactly what's there before any decision gets made. The evaluation tells you which situation you're dealing with, what it means, and what it takes to address it.

  • Identify whether you need targeted repair, partial rewire, or full replacement
  • Desert heat and thermal cycling cause breakdown homeowners often misdiagnose
  • Stab-in connections lose tension in desert swings and fail more than expected
  • $99 service call covers assessment and guaranteed pricing before any work
  • our electricians build every connection to the Lifetime Connection Standard
  • Home Team Electric handles permits for wiring work beyond device replacement

Know the Signs

Signs Your Wiring May Need Attention

Old wiring rarely fails all at once. It gives you signals first. If you notice any of these in your home, it's worth having an electrician open things up and check the true condition of what's behind your walls.

  • 01

Warm or discolored outlets and switches

An outlet or switch plate that feels warm to the touch, or shows brown scorching around the screws, is one of the clearest warnings here. Heat at the device means resistance in the connection, and resistance means current is being turned into heat instead of moving cleanly through the wire. That's how a wall fire starts, slowly and out of sight. Warm to the touch is the signal to stop using the circuit and have it checked.

  • 02

    Two-prong outlets throughout the home

Ungrounded two-prong outlets tell you the wiring predates modern grounding. Without a ground path, a fault has nowhere safe to go, which puts you and your electronics at risk. Most of these homes also lack the AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) protection that current California Electrical Code requires. Swapping in three-prong covers doesn't add a ground. It just hides that one was never there.

  • 03

    Cloth-insulated or brittle wiring

Older homes were wired with cloth or early rubber insulation instead of modern plastic. After decades in a hot attic or a desert wall cavity, that insulation dries out, cracks, and crumbles off the copper. Bare conductors near framing and fixtures are a fire risk that grows every year. If an electrician has ever mentioned cloth wiring or you've seen frayed jacket near a fixture, the system is aging out of safe service.

  • 04

    Aluminum branch-circuit wiring

Homes from the mid-1960s to late 1970s were often wired with aluminum branch circuits. Aluminum expands, contracts, and oxidizes differently than copper, which loosens connections and builds heat at outlets and switches over time. The CPSC and home insurers have flagged it for years as a known fire concern. It isn't an emergency tonight, but it needs a planned, code-correct remediation rather than a patch.

  • 05

    Knob-and-tube wiring

If your home was built in the early 20th century and never fully rewired, it may still run on knob-and-tube. This wiring has no ground, can't safely handle modern loads, and becomes dangerous when buried under insulation, which traps the heat it was designed to shed in open air. Many insurers won't cover a home that still has it active. Knob-and-tube is a replacement, not a repair.

  • 06

    Flickering lights and dead outlets

Lights that flicker or dim on their own, outlets that work intermittently or have gone dead, and switches that spark when you flip them all point to loose or failing connections in the wiring. A single bad outlet can be a simple fix. The same symptom repeating across multiple rooms usually means the branch wiring itself is degrading. It's the system telling you the connections it has relied on for decades are starting to let go.

  • 07

    An insurance or inspection flag

When an insurer, a buyer's inspector, or an appraiser calls out your wiring, it's because aluminum, knob-and-tube, or ungrounded circuits carry documented, repeatable risk. They see thousands of homes, so a consistent flag reflects a consistent pattern. Ignoring it doesn't change the condition and can affect your coverage, your claims, and your home's value. A flagged system calls for a rewiring plan, not a workaround.

Frank's Translation

What Your Home's Wiring Actually Does

Power leaves the panel and travels through branch wiring inside your walls, ceilings, and floors to reach every outlet, switch, light, and appliance in the home. You never see it, but it's the path everything depends on, and it's carrying loads today that it may never have been built to handle.

If the panel is the heart, the wiring is the nervous system. It's the network that carries power, and safety, to every corner of the home.

Modern wiring does two jobs at once. It delivers power where you need it, and through grounding and protection it gives a fault a safe path to ground instead of through you or into the framing.

When that wiring ages out, it doesn't stop working all at once. It just stops protecting. Insulation breaks down, connections loosen, and the safety margin the home was built with quietly disappears behind the drywall.

An electrician from Home Team Electric on a residential job in the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin

Warm outlets, flickering lights, breakers that trip for no clear reason. Those symptoms aren't the problem. They're the wiring telling you the problem is behind the wall.

The Real Question

What Kind of Wiring Is in Your Walls?

Not all wiring is the same, and the type in your home largely decides whether it's safe for the way you live now. A house built before modern grounding was wired for a fraction of today's electrical demand: no central AC running all summer, no electronics in every room, no EV charger in the garage. The wiring didn't get weaker because you added load. It was simply never built to carry it, and in the desert heat the aging only moves faster. A rewire is how the home gets the safe, grounded, code-current wiring it needs today and for the next several decades.

Across the homes we service, wiring falls into three broad families. Find where yours sits.

Oldest homes

Knob & Tube

PRE-1950

Replacement, not repair

Early-century wiring with no ground path and no capacity for modern loads. It becomes hazardous once buried under attic insulation, and many insurers won't cover a home that still has it active. This wiring gets fully replaced, not patched.

Mid-century homes

Aluminum

1965-1979

A known fire concern

Common in homes wired from the mid-1960s to late 1970s. Aluminum loosens and heats at connections as it ages, a pattern the CPSC and insurers have flagged for years. It calls for a planned, code-correct remediation rather than another quick fix at the outlet.

Current standard

Copper

MODERN

What today's code expects

Modern copper branch wiring (NM-B) with a full ground and the AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) protection current California Electrical Code requires. This is the standard a rewire brings your home up to, sized and protected for how a household actually lives now.

MIXED

PARTIAL

Many desert homes are a mix: a kitchen or addition rewired at some point while the original branch circuits stay hidden in the rest of the house. A partial rewire can be the right call, but only after an evaluation maps what's actually behind the walls. It isn't about the age on the deed. It's about what's truly running power today.

No Guesswork

Mapping your wiring is part of every $99 service call

You can't tell what's behind the drywall from the outlet covers, so we don't guess. An electrician inspects accessible wiring, the panel, junctions, and grounding, then tells you straight whether you're looking at targeted repairs, a partial rewire, or a whole-home rewire. We evaluate first, then give you a clear plan and an honest answer.

Choose Your Coverage

How We Stand Behind Your Rewire

Every rewire we do gets the same foundation: grounded, code-current copper wiring with AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) protection. The three tiers differ in one thing: how long we stand behind the work, and how much maintenance comes with it.

Every Rewire Includes

  • Code-current copper branch wiring with a complete grounding system
  • AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) protection where California Electrical Code requires it
  • Clean drywall access and patch-ready restoration of every opening we make
  • All required permits and full building department correspondence
  • All utility company coordination handled for you
  • Installation that meets or exceeds local code, confirmed by city inspection
  • Our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee

Core Rewire Coverage

Workmanship parts and labor

Backed by Home Team Electric

Backed entirely by Home Team Electric, ours, not the manufacturer's. If covered wiring or a device we installed fails from a defect or workmanship issue during the coverage window, we repair or replace it at no charge.

1 annual maintenance visit in the first year.

Extended Rewire Coverage

Extended parts and labor

Backed by Home Team Electric

Stretches the same Home Team Electric coverage across a longer window. A covered defect or workmanship issue stays on us well past the standard term, with no manufacturer middleman to chase.

2 annual maintenance visits over the first years of coverage.

Most Protection

Lifetime Rewire

Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee

Backed by Home Team Electric

Backed by Home Team Electric. No expiration. A covered defect or workmanship issue stays our responsibility, and the coverage stays with the home.

3 annual maintenance visits in the early years of ownership.

The visits aren't a sales add-on. They're how the guarantee stays valid.

Coverage applies to our wiring and devices under normal operating conditions with proper maintenance. It doesn't cover damage from skipped maintenance, unapproved third-party work, or conditions that routine annual service would have caught first. That's why each tier includes its own maintenance program.

The Difference Most Miss

Your Coverage Transfers With the Home

The coverage on your rewire belongs to the home, so it goes to the next owner along with the house. There's nothing to file and no window to meet. The rewire coverage and the Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee stay with the home together.

Start to Finish

We Handle the Entire Job

A whole-home rewire comes with permits, a city inspection, utility coordination, and the work of opening and restoring walls. That sounds like a lot to live through. The good news is you don't manage any of it. We do, and we do it in a way that keeps your home livable while we work.

Required, Not Optional

Permits & Inspection

A rewire is a permitted job in every jurisdiction across the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin.

Every permit requires a licensed contractor, a documented installation, and a city inspection before the work is signed off. That inspection confirms the new wiring meets California Electrical Code and current NEC standards, including the required AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) protection. Skipping the permit only moves the problem to the worst possible time: a home sale, an insurance claim, a future emergency. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection on every rewire.

We Coordinate It

Utility Coordination

A rewire often needs the utility to de-energize and re-energize service so we can work safely at the panel and feeders.

We coordinate directly with the utility for any disconnect and reconnect, and we line it up with the inspection so the timing actually works and your power is down for as little time as possible. You don't call the utility, you don't schedule the shutoff, and you don't chase the reconnect. That whole back-and-forth is ours, not yours.

Handled By Our Team

Walls & Documentation

The drywall openings we make, the permit, the inspection sign-off, and the records that prove the work was done right are all handled in one place.

We open walls cleanly, fish the new wiring, and leave every opening patch-ready, with the full scope documented from start to finish. So when an inspector, an insurer, an appraiser, or a future buyer asks, the paper trail is already there. A home that's rewired, permitted, inspected, and documented is the version that holds up at sale and at claim time. That's the version we hand you.

Keeps the Guarantee Valid

What Every Annual Maintenance Visit Includes

The rewire is the start. The ongoing care is what keeps the system safe and the workmanship guarantee intact. Here's exactly what we check, every visit.

  • New branch wiring and connections, inspected for heat, looseness, or wear
  • A complete grounding system evaluation
  • Outlet and switch inspection and testing throughout the home
  • AFCI (fire prevention) Protection testing
  • GFCI (shock prevention) Protection testing throughout the home: kitchen, bathrooms, garage, outdoor areas, pool equipment, and the EV charger
  • Smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm testing, plus expiration verification
  • The main panel and any subpanels, inspected end to end

Every visit is performed by an electrician and documented on a signed checklist, to NEC and Home Team Electric standards. Nothing is taken on faith. It's written down.

The permits, the inspection, the utility, the wall work, the documentation, and the yearly care. You don't manage any of it. Book the $99 service call and we'll handle the whole job from here.

Our Process

Here is What Happens When You Call

No surprises. Every job follows the same steps, since 2006.

1

Schedule and Arrive

Wiring calls are scheduled by urgency. If there is an active electrical problem, same-day service available. If you want a wiring evaluation ahead of a renovation, home purchase, or planned upgrade, we book a time that works for you.

2

Baseline Evaluation

Every call starts with a visual evaluation of the circuits involved and inspection of the main panel or sub-panel feeding them. This happens automatically for three reasons: to confirm it is safe to work on, to match recommendations to the system as it stands, and to protect our workmanship guarantee.

3

Full Evaluation Offered

A deeper assessment of your home's overall electrical condition is included at no additional cost and offered without pressure. You decide whether you would like it performed. Work proceeds either way based on the baseline evaluation already completed.

4

Explanation and Options

The electrician explains what was found. If wiring is in good condition, you will hear that. If circuits need attention, the electrician names them specifically and explains why. If a full rewire is the right conversation, the electrician walks through the work involved, the permit process, and your options.

5

Pricing and Decision

You get the price before any work begins, with no surprises. Our $99 service fee covers evaluation time, your options, and guaranteed pricing, and every decision about what happens next belongs to you. For after-hours emergencies dispatched at night or on weekends, the fee is $289.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about home wiring and rewiring

How Does Living in This Desert Change the Way You Evaluate a Home’s Electrical System?

It changes the evaluation from the start. Coachella Valley summers regularly climb past 115 degrees, and Morongo Basin day-to-night swings can exceed 40 degrees, cycling expansion and contraction through every connection. So symptoms get read against the home's age, construction era, and load history, not just the breaker that tripped.

What Protections Do I Have If Something Goes Wrong After the Job?

Two guarantees with proof behind them. The 100% Satisfaction Guarantee means if the work does not meet your expectations, we make it right. The Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee means we fix workmanship failures at no charge, and the coverage stays with the home if you sell it. Behind both: California C-10 Electrical Contractor License #879507 and a $1,000,000 per-occurrence liability policy.

Why Does Home Team Electric Only Work on Residential Homes?

Because residential electrical work is a specialty, not a side category. Most contractors split time between construction, commercial buildings, and residential calls. Home Team Electric chose one focus in 2006: the electrical systems inside homes across the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin. Decades inside thousands of desert homes builds pattern recognition no generalist schedule can produce.

Who Is Home Team Electric, and Who Will Actually Be in My Home?

Home Team Electric is a residential-only electrical contractor serving the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin since 2006. The person at your door is a Home Team Electric electrician: drug tested, background checked, and professionally trained, with weekly ongoing training. The company has completed more than 25,000 residential projects, with a 4.9 Google rating and 16,000+ homeowners served.

Do I Need GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection by the Pool and Spa?

Yes. Code requires GFCI (shock prevention) protection for pool and spa equipment, nearby receptacles, and underwater lighting, and the requirement exists because water and electricity meet here on purpose. Many desert pools predate today's requirements and run unprotected. If you do not know whether yours is protected, that is exactly what the evaluation answers.

When Does an Older Desert Home Need Rewiring?

Rewiring is warranted when the wiring itself, not just a device, has aged past safety: brittle or damaged insulation, ungrounded two-wire circuits, aluminum branch wiring, or repeated faults across different circuits. Desert attics bake wiring insulation for decades. An evaluation maps which circuits actually need work, because most older homes need targeted rewiring, not a whole-home gut.

What Does Whole-Home Surge Protection Actually Protect?

A whole-home surge protector at the panel clamps voltage spikes before they reach your circuits, protecting everything plugged in: AC systems, appliances, EV chargers, and electronics. In the desert, monsoon lightning, grid switching, and your own large motors all generate surges. Plug strips alone protect single devices. The panel unit protects the home.

Why Do My Lights Flicker When the AC Kicks On?

A brief dim when a large motor starts can be normal, because compressors pull a surge of current on startup. Regular, noticeable flickering across multiple rooms is not. It usually means the panel or service is near its limit, or a connection has loosened under desert heat. The pattern decides which, and the pattern is worth reading professionally.
