The Short Answer

What should I do if my circuit breaker keeps tripping?

Circuit Breaker Repair and Replacement

BBB Accredited Business

When a circuit breaker keeps tripping, won't hold, or leaves part of the home without power, most homeowners assume they need a new breaker. Sometimes that's the right call. More often, the breaker isn't actually the problem. A tripping breaker could mean the circuit is overloaded, a connection is loose somewhere on the line, there's a short further down the circuit, or the breaker itself has actually failed. When you call Home Team Electric, an electrician performs a baseline evaluation first. You'll know exactly what's wrong, why it happened, and what it will take to fix it before you decide on next steps.

  • Baseline evaluation on every call makes sure the system is safe and intact before any work begins
  • Desert conditions accelerate breaker wear through heat, dust, and thermal cycling
  • Tripping breaker often signals overload, not failure, and diagnosis prevents unnecessary replacement
  • our electricians perform thermal imaging and amperage testing to pinpoint root cause
  • Lifetime workmanship guarantee backs every repair, and the coverage stays with the home
  • Residential circuit breaker replacement requires a licensed electrician to work safely in an energized panel

Breaker keeps tripping or won't reset?

An electrician will find out why the breaker is tripping, running hot, or refusing to reset, then explain exactly what it needs in plain language. Same-day visits.

Know the Signs

Signs a Breaker Needs Attention

A breaker is built to protect your home, so when one starts acting up it's usually warning you about something upstream. If you notice any of these, it's worth having an electrician pull the cover and check the real condition.

  • 01

A breaker that trips over and over

A breaker that trips once under an unusual load is doing its job. One that trips on the same circuit again and again under normal use is telling you something: an overloaded circuit, a breaker wearing out with age, or a loose connection heating up behind it. Resetting it without finding the cause just sends the same fault current back through wiring that's already under stress. The trip is the symptom, not the problem.

  • 02

    A breaker that won't reset

If a breaker won't stay set, or feels loose and mushy when you flip it, the mechanism inside may have failed or there's still a fault on the circuit. Forcing it repeatedly can weld the contacts or defeat the very protection it's supposed to provide. A breaker is a mechanical safety device with a service life, and a dead one leaves that circuit either unprotected or unusable. Either way it needs to be diagnosed, not muscled.

  • 03

A breaker or panel that runs hot

Breakers carry current, so a little warmth is normal. A breaker that's genuinely hot to the touch, or a panel cover that's warm in one spot, is not. Heat at a breaker usually points to a loose connection, a failing breaker, or a circuit drawing more than it should for too long. In the desert, summer ambient heat stacks on top of that load, so a marginal connection that limped along in spring can start cooking by July. Heat is damage in progress.

  • 04

Burning smell or discoloration at the panel

A hot, fishy, or burnt-plastic smell near the panel is one of the most serious signs here. So are scorch marks, browning, or melted plastic around a breaker or the bus it clips onto. By the time it smells or shows color, heat has already damaged insulation and breaker bodies, often from arcing at a loose connection. Treat it as the warning before smoke: shut off the load if you can and have it evaluated. This one doesn't wait.

  • 05

Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling at a breaker

A panel should be quiet. A breaker that buzzes loudly, crackles, or sizzles is arcing or vibrating against a poor connection, and that arc burns metal every second it runs. The noise tends to come and go with load, which makes it easy to dismiss. It shouldn't be. A breaker making a sound it's not supposed to make is failing in real time, and the contacts and bus it sits on degrade further with every episode.

  • 06

Federal Pacific, FPE Stab-Lok, or Zinsco breakers

If your breakers read Federal Pacific, FPE, Stab-Lok, or Zinsco, you have a known reliability concern, not just an old label. Independent testing and CPSC records show many of these breakers don't trip reliably under a real fault, run hot at the bus, or stay energized even when switched off. That defeats the one job a breaker exists to do. In most cases these are replaced as a planned changeout rather than a drop-everything emergency, unless there are active signs of overheating. Either way, swapping a single Stab-Lok or Zinsco breaker for a generic substitute is not a safe fix.

  • 07

A breaker that's the wrong size for its wire

Sometimes the problem isn't a bad breaker, it's the wrong breaker. A breaker rated higher than the wire it protects will let that wire overheat before it ever trips, which is exactly backward from how the system is supposed to fail safe. This shows up after past DIY work, a previous owner's shortcut, or a mismatched replacement grabbed off a shelf. It often looks fine and tests fine right up until the wiring carries a heavy load. Matching the breaker to the wire and the panel is part of doing it right.

Frank's Translation

What a Circuit Breaker Actually Does

Every circuit in your home runs through a breaker at the panel. The breaker sits between the incoming power and the wiring that feeds your lights, outlets, and appliances, watching the current that flows through it and standing ready to cut that circuit off the instant something goes wrong.

A circuit breaker is the safety valve on a single circuit. When it trips, it isn't failing. It's working.

Two things make a breaker trip. An overload, when a circuit pulls more current than its wiring is rated for, and a short or fault, when current finds a path it shouldn't take. In either case the breaker shuts that circuit off to keep the wire from overheating inside your walls.

So a breaker that trips, runs hot, or won't reset is rarely the whole story. It's reacting to an overloaded circuit, a loose connection, or its own worn-out mechanism. Replace the breaker without finding the cause and the new one trips too.

Tripping, heat at the panel, a breaker that won't reset. Those aren't the failure. They're the breaker telling you where the failure is.

The Right Breaker

Not Every Breaker Is the Same Breaker

When a breaker fails, the fix isn't always a like-for-like swap. Modern code, and good practice, calls for specific protective breakers on specific circuits, and putting the right type back is part of why the work holds up. A standard breaker protects the wire from overload and short circuits. The two specialty types add protection a plain breaker can't: one watches for the dangerous arcing that starts fires, the other watches for the current leak that shocks people. Which one belongs on a given circuit depends on the room and the code in force.

Here are the three breaker types we work with most, and where each one belongs.

General circuits

Standard

THERMAL-MAGNETIC

The everyday workhorse

The common breaker on most circuits. It trips on overload (too much current for too long) and on a short circuit (a sudden fault). It protects the wiring, which is its whole job, but it doesn't watch for arc faults or ground faults. When one of these fails, we match the replacement to the wire and the panel rather than to whatever fits.

Bedrooms and living areas

AFCI

FIRE PREVENTION

Catches what starts fires

AFCI (fire prevention) breakers detect the small, dangerous arcing that a standard breaker ignores, the kind that smolders inside a wall or behind a worn cord. Code requires them on more living-area circuits with each cycle, so a failed breaker in these rooms is often the moment to bring that circuit up to current protection.

Wet and outdoor areas

GFCI

SHOCK PREVENTION

Catches what shocks people

GFCI (shock prevention) breakers cut power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, the situation that causes shocks near water. They belong on kitchen, bath, garage, outdoor, and pool-equipment circuits. Replacing a tripping breaker in one of these spots is the time to confirm the right shock protection is actually in place.

Recalled

PANELS

Federal Pacific, FPE Stab-Lok, and Zinsco panels are a category of their own. Their breakers are known to fail to trip, and reliable modern AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) breakers often aren't made to fit them. In these panels the honest answer is usually a planned panel replacement, not another substitute breaker forced into a bus that can't hold it safely.

Diagnose First

Finding the cause is part of every $99 service call

A breaker that trips, runs hot, or won't reset is reacting to something, and guessing wastes your money on a part that trips again. An electrician tests the breaker, checks the connections behind it, and looks at what the circuit is actually carrying, so the breaker that goes back in is the right type for that circuit and the real problem gets fixed. We diagnose first, then give you a straight answer.

How We Stand Behind It

How We Handle Breaker Repair and Replacement

Every breaker job gets the same foundation: we find the cause, we use the correct breaker for the circuit, and we stand behind the work. What changes is the scope, from a single failed breaker to a recalled panel that needs to come out entirely.

Every Breaker Job Includes

  • A full diagnosis of why the breaker is tripping, heating, or failing to reset, not just a swap
  • The correct breaker type and rating matched to the circuit and the panel
  • Connections checked and re-torqued so the new breaker isn't fighting a loose joint
  • AFCI (fire prevention) and GFCI (shock prevention) protection confirmed where code calls for it
  • Work that meets or exceeds California Electrical Code and current NEC standards
  • Clear labeling so the right breaker is easy to find next time
  • Our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee

Single Breaker Repair

One circuit, diagnosed and fixed

Backed by Home Team Electric

When a single breaker is failing or a connection has gone loose, we find the cause and replace the breaker with the correct type and rating for that circuit. The fix is backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee, the same as every job we do.

1 diagnostic and repair visit that addresses the cause, not just the symptom.

Most Protection

Multi-Breaker or Hot-Panel Repair

Several breakers or a panel running hot

Backed by Home Team Electric

When more than one breaker is involved, or the panel itself is running hot, we evaluate every breaker and every connection in the panel, not only the one that tripped. You get the full picture and the correct breakers throughout, all under the same workmanship coverage.

1 panel-wide evaluation with all needed breakers and connections addressed in one trip.

Recalled Panel Changeout

Federal Pacific, FPE Stab-Lok, or Zinsco

Backed by Home Team Electric

When the breakers are in a recalled Federal Pacific, FPE Stab-Lok, or Zinsco panel, a single swap isn't a safe fix, because reliable modern breakers often won't fit safely. We plan a full panel replacement so the whole system gets dependable, code-current protection.

1 planned panel replacement scoped at the evaluation, then completed start to finish.

A breaker that trips again next month wasn't fixed. It was reset with a new part.

Coverage applies to the work we perform and the breakers we install under normal operating conditions. It doesn't cover a circuit that's overloaded by added equipment we never saw, damage from unapproved third-party work, or a failing condition elsewhere in the panel that a full evaluation would have caught. That's why we diagnose the cause before we replace the part.

The Difference Most Miss

Our Workmanship Guarantee Transfers With the Home

The coverage on the breaker work belongs to the home, so it goes to the next owner along with the house. There's nothing to file and no window to meet. The work you paid for keeps protecting the house after you're gone, and the Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee stays with the home too.

Start to Finish

We Handle the Whole Job

A breaker problem can be a quick fix or the first sign of something bigger in the panel. Either way, you don't have to figure out which. We diagnose it, do the work to code, document it, and tell you the truth about what we see.

Cause Before Cure

Diagnosis & Testing

Before any breaker comes out, we find out why the old one was failing.

We test the breaker, check the connections behind it, and look at the load the circuit actually carries. A tripping breaker can mean an overload, a loose connection, a short, or a worn-out breaker, and each one has a different fix. Skipping the diagnosis is how a swapped breaker trips again two weeks later. We find the cause first, then replace the part, so the fix actually holds.

Required Where It Applies

Permits & Inspection

A single breaker swap usually isn't permitted, but a panel replacement is, in every jurisdiction across the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin.

When the job crosses into a panel replacement, like a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco changeout, it requires a permit, a licensed contractor, and a city inspection that confirms the work meets California Electrical Code and current NEC standards. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection when the scope calls for it, so the work is right on paper as well as in the wall.

Handled By Our Team

All Documentation

What we saw, what we replaced, and the protection now on each circuit, all written down.

Every breaker we install, every connection we correct, and any inspection sign-off is documented and kept on file. So when an inspector, an insurer, an appraiser, or a future buyer asks what was done, the record is already there. A panel that's been diagnosed, corrected, and documented is the version that holds up at sale and at claim time. That's the version we hand you.

Keeps the Protection Real

What an Annual Panel Visit Checks

Breakers and connections drift over time, especially in desert heat. An annual visit catches the loose joint or fading breaker before it becomes the burnt smell. Here's exactly what we check, every visit.

  • Every breaker inspected and tested for correct tripping
  • Connections checked for heat, looseness, and discoloration
  • The main panel and any subpanels reviewed end to end
  • AFCI (fire prevention) Protection tested on the circuits that have it
  • GFCI (shock prevention) Protection tested throughout: kitchen, bathrooms, garage, outdoor areas, pool equipment, and the Level 2 EV charger
  • Breaker ratings confirmed against the wire each one protects
  • Any aging Federal Pacific, FPE Stab-Lok, or Zinsco equipment flagged for a replacement plan

Every visit is performed by an electrician and documented on a signed checklist, to NEC and Home Team Electric standards. Nothing is taken on faith. It's written down.

The diagnosis, the correct breaker, the connections, the paperwork, and the protection that follows your home. You don't sort out which kind of fix you need. Book the $99 service call and we'll find the cause and handle the rest.

Our Process

Here is What Happens When You Call

No surprises. Every job follows the same steps, since 2006.

1

Baseline Evaluation

Before any tool is picked up, we visually evaluate the circuits involved and inspect the main panel or sub-panel feeding them. This happens on every call for three reasons: electrician safety, system integrity, and to protect our workmanship guarantee.

2

Full Evaluation and Explanation

A deeper assessment of your home's overall electrical condition is included at no additional cost. The electrician explains what they see, outlines next steps, and if a diagnostic is needed, describes exactly what it involves and how long it takes.

3

Diagnostic (If Needed)

When the situation calls for deeper investigation, we perform a diagnostic using specialized tools and expertise to pinpoint exactly what's wrong and why. There is no time limit. It takes as long as it takes and is guaranteed to find the answer.

4

Pricing and Your Decision

Once the evaluation is complete, you get a clear explanation of what's required and why. If a breaker replacement or repair is needed, you decide exactly how to move forward. Every decision about what happens next belongs to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about circuit breaker repair and replacement

How Does Living in This Desert Change the Way You Evaluate a Home’s Electrical System?

It changes the evaluation from the start. Coachella Valley summers regularly climb past 115 degrees, and Morongo Basin day-to-night swings can exceed 40 degrees, cycling expansion and contraction through every connection. So symptoms get read against the home's age, construction era, and load history, not just the breaker that tripped.

What Protections Do I Have If Something Goes Wrong After the Job?

Two guarantees with proof behind them. The 100% Satisfaction Guarantee means if the work does not meet your expectations, we make it right. The Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee means we fix workmanship failures at no charge, and the coverage stays with the home if you sell it. Behind both: California C-10 Electrical Contractor License #879507 and a $1,000,000 per-occurrence liability policy.

Why Does Home Team Electric Only Work on Residential Homes?

Because residential electrical work is a specialty, not a side category. Most contractors split time between construction, commercial buildings, and residential calls. Home Team Electric chose one focus in 2006: the electrical systems inside homes across the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin. Decades inside thousands of desert homes builds pattern recognition no generalist schedule can produce.

Who Is Home Team Electric, and Who Will Actually Be in My Home?

Home Team Electric is a residential-only electrical contractor serving the Coachella Valley and Morongo Basin since 2006. The person at your door is a Home Team Electric electrician: drug tested, background checked, and professionally trained, with weekly ongoing training. The company has completed more than 25,000 residential projects, with a 4.9 Google rating and 16,000+ homeowners served.

Do I Need GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection by the Pool and Spa?

Yes. Code requires GFCI (shock prevention) protection for pool and spa equipment, nearby receptacles, and underwater lighting, and the requirement exists because water and electricity meet here on purpose. Many desert pools predate today's requirements and run unprotected. If you do not know whether yours is protected, that is exactly what the evaluation answers.

When Does an Older Desert Home Need Rewiring?

Rewiring is warranted when the wiring itself, not just a device, has aged past safety: brittle or damaged insulation, ungrounded two-wire circuits, aluminum branch wiring, or repeated faults across different circuits. Desert attics bake wiring insulation for decades. An evaluation maps which circuits actually need work, because most older homes need targeted rewiring, not a whole-home gut.
