Know the Signs
Old wiring rarely fails all at once. It gives you signals first. If you notice any of these in your home, it's worth having a certified electrician open things up and check the true condition of what's behind your walls.
An outlet or switch plate that feels warm to the touch, or shows brown scorching around the screws, is one of the clearest warnings here. Heat at the device means resistance in the connection, and resistance means current is being turned into heat instead of moving cleanly through the wire. That's how a wall fire starts, slowly and out of sight. Warm to the touch is the signal to stop using the circuit and have it checked.
Ungrounded two-prong outlets tell you the wiring predates modern grounding. Without a ground path, a fault has nowhere safe to go, which puts you and your electronics at risk.
