Why Would a Patio, Garage or Pool-Side Outlet Stop Working at Your Rancho Mirage Home?

It can be the safety device on its circuit, tripped or failed, or the outlet itself. While the owners of a Rancho Mirage home were away, a storm tripped the garage's GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection. An outdoor outlet had been damaged where a cord was left plugged in. We fixed the protection, which was wired backward, and replaced the outlet.

Outside and in the Garage

What Stops an Outlet Outside or in the Garage in Rancho Mirage?

A patio, garage or pool-side outlet can stop when the safety device protecting its circuit trips or fails, or when the outlet itself is damaged. That device, GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection, shuts off the power to prevent a shock. We've seen both at Rancho Mirage homes, so we check the device, the outlet and the wiring between them.

A dead outlet outside isn't always a bad outlet.

Fixed before the owners left

At the 2011 Rancho Mirage home where a storm tripped the garage's protection, the owners had another trip coming up. They chose to have the repair done right away, and the garage and outdoor outlets were working again before they left.

Garage, Patio, Pool and Yard

Where Have Outlets Stopped Around Rancho Mirage Homes?

On our Rancho Mirage jobs, outlets have stopped in garages and on patios. A storm, an outage across a whole community and a cord left plugged in have each played a part. Tell us where the outlet is and what happened just before, and we'll know where to start looking.

  • 01

    In the garage

The protection in one Rancho Mirage garage had been wired backward, with the wires for incoming and outgoing power swapped. That home was built in 2011, so a newer home can have it too. We rewired it the right way.

  • 02

    On the patio

After a power outage across one condo community here, a home's patio and courtyard outlets stayed dead. The breaker protecting them had failed, and it wasn't the right type. A new breaker brought the outlets back, and we added Whole Home surge protection, which helps guard the home's appliances and electronics against power spikes. Whole Home surge protection

    By the pool

On some of our Rancho Mirage jobs, the pool service crew had been using the home's outdoor outlets, and on one, a pool crew may have overloaded a circuit. If your crew uses the outlet that stopped, tell us.

  • 04

    Out in the yard

Our Rancho Mirage jobs have included fountains fed by extension cords buried in the yard. A cord left plugged in outdoors is also where one outlet here was damaged. If a cord stays plugged in outside, point it out when we come.

Knowing where and when an outlet stopped tells us where to start.

Know the Difference

What Can You Spot Yourself, and What Needs a Look Inside?

Some reasons an outdoor outlet stops show from the outside, and some only show behind the cover or in the panel. At Rancho Mirage homes, a damaged outdoor outlet was plain to see, while protection wired backward and a failed breaker were not. So even when an outlet looks fine, we check what's behind it.

What you can spot
  • An outdoor outlet damaged where a cord was left plugged in
  • Several outlets out at once, like a patio and a courtyard
  • An extension cord run out to a fountain in the yard

What takes a look inside
  • Protection with its incoming and outgoing wires swapped
  • A protective breaker that has failed
  • A circuit a pool crew's equipment may be overloading

An outlet that looks fine can still have a problem behind it.

Worth a Call First

Which Outlet Problems Are Worth a Call in Rancho Mirage?

  • Outlets still dead after the power comes back on
  • An outdoor outlet that looks damaged
  • Protection that went off while you were away

Any of these is worth a call at your Rancho Mirage home, because on our jobs here each one led to a part that needed fixing. If an outlet looks damaged, stop using it until it's checked. When you call, tell us which outlets are out and where they are.

What to Expect

How Do We Trace a Dead Outlet at a Rancho Mirage Home?

We follow the outlet back to the safety device and breaker that feed it at your Rancho Mirage home. The price comes down to which part needs the fix: the protection, the outlet or the wiring behind it. Every outlet on that circuit gets tested, with no mess left. You'll know its protection is wired right, unlike that 2011 garage's.

  1. 01

    We evaluate first.

We check the outlet that stopped, the safety device protecting it and the breaker in your panel.

  2. 02

    We explain the situation.

You hear, in plain words, which part failed and why, whether it's the protection, the outlet itself or how the device was wired.

  3. 03

We give you the price before any work begins.

Our $99 service fee covers the time we need to evaluate the situation, the available options, and guaranteed pricing before any work begins. Every decision about what happens next belongs to you.

  4. 04

    Then you decide.

We'll explain what we see and walk you through your options. You decide what fits your home.
