Is the Pool Equipment at Your Rancho Mirage Home Bonded and Protected?

You can't tell by looking. At one Rancho Mirage home, we came out for garage outlets that kept tripping, and the evaluation also showed pool equipment whose metal parts weren't properly tied together, or bonded. We restored the pool bonding and added surge protection, which guards against power spikes, at the main and pool panels.

Bonding and Protection

What Do Bonding and Protection Mean for Rancho Mirage Pool Equipment?

Bonding connects the metal parts of your pool equipment, like the pump and motor, so they stay at the same voltage. Protection means two more things: GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection on the circuits, which guards against shock, and surge protection for power spikes. On Rancho Mirage pool equipment, we check all three together.

A pool that runs fine can still need its bonding checked.

Pools on our jobs here

About one in five of our Rancho Mirage jobs has involved a pool or spa, and nearly all of that work is the pool equipment's electrical: pump protection, pool panels, bonding, lights and surge protection.

What We Check

Which Parts of the Pool Setup Do We Check in Rancho Mirage?

We check three things on Rancho Mirage pool equipment: the bonding on its metal parts, the protection on its circuits, and the panel that feeds it. Each has its own job, so one can be in good shape while another needs work, and an evaluation is how you find out.

  • 01

    Bonding on the metal parts

Bonding covers the pump, the motor and the equipment's other metal parts, keeping them at the same voltage. On our Rancho Mirage jobs, bonding that's missing or not done properly is one of the gaps we see on pool equipment.

  • 02

    Protection on the pump

GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection on a pool pump's circuit guards against shock. On our Rancho Mirage jobs, it's the pool equipment gap that comes up most often: a pump without it.

  • 03

A panel for the pool equipment

Pool equipment can run from its own second, smaller panel. On our Rancho Mirage jobs, we've cleaned sand and debris out of these panels as part of the work.

  • 04

    A new pool or spa

Putting in a new pool or spa takes its own city permit, separate from other work on your home. We've also been asked here about a dedicated circuit for a spa still to come. the city's plan review checklist

Bonding, protection and the panel each do their own job.

Know the Difference

How Is Bonding Different From GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection?

Bonding keeps the equipment's metal parts at the same voltage, and GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection shuts the power off when it trips. They do different jobs, and one doesn't replace the other. That's why, on Rancho Mirage pool equipment, we check the bonding and the protection separately.

Bonding
  • Connects the pump, motor and other metal parts
  • Keeps them at the same voltage as each other
  • Restored at a 2000 home after an evaluation for other work

GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection
  • Shuts the power off to prevent a shock
  • The gap our jobs here show most often on pool pumps
  • Can sit in the panel as a breaker, or at an outlet

Bonded and protected are two different checks.

Worth a Call First

Which Pool Equipment Signs Mean a Rancho Mirage Owner Should Call?

  • A pump with no GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection
  • A pump or motor with no bonding
  • An old spa circuit left in place near the pool

The pool at your Rancho Mirage home is worth a call if it shows any of these, since each is a gap our jobs here have turned up on pool equipment. Leave an old spa circuit alone until we've looked at it. If you don't know whether the equipment was ever bonded, we'll check on the visit.

What to Expect

What Happens When We Look at Pool Equipment in Rancho Mirage?

At your Rancho Mirage home, we check the pool panel, protection and bonding. Which fix the equipment needs decides the price: bonding, protection or a new pool-equipment panel. One Rancho Mirage pool panel we opened was heavy with sand. We don't leave until the pump's protection is tested, any sand is cleaned out and you know which parts are bonded.

  1. 01

    We evaluate first.

We look at the pool panel, the protection on the pump's circuit and how the equipment's metal parts are bonded.

  2. 02

    We explain the situation.

You hear what's in place and what's missing, in plain words, with each fix the equipment would need.

  3. 03

We give you the price before any work begins.

Our $99 service fee covers the time we need to evaluate the situation, the available options, and guaranteed pricing before any work begins. Every decision about what happens next belongs to you.
