Why Won’t the Landscape Lights Come On at Your Rancho Mirage Home?

It can be loose connections, a worn transformer, the circuit's GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection or an outlet cover that lets water in, and it can be more than one. One Rancho Mirage home had all four, including a cover not rated for outdoor use. We fixed each one, and the lights came back on.

From the Panel to the Last Light

What Can Keep Landscape Lights Off at a Rancho Mirage Home?

Landscape lights can go dark at any point along their power's path: the breaker, the outdoor outlet and its safety device, the transformer that feeds them, or the wiring and connections in the yard. At Rancho Mirage homes, we've seen trouble at each point, so we check the whole path, not just the bulbs.

One dark yard can have more than one cause.

When the cover was left open

Four months after we fixed its four problems, one Rancho Mirage home's landscape lights went off again. An outdoor outlet cover had been left open, and water got in during a wind and rain storm and tripped the lights. Once the cover is right, keeping it closed matters too.

Along the Path to the Lights

Which Parts of a Rancho Mirage Lighting Setup Can Fail?

Every part of a landscape lighting setup can fail, from the transformer to the last fixture and the circuit that powers them. On our Rancho Mirage jobs, that has meant worn transformers, timers and light sensors, burned-out fixtures and buried wiring. Each one changes the fix, so we pin down which part gave out before anything is replaced.

  • 01

    The transformer

The transformer turns the outlet's power into what the landscape lights run on, and a worn one can keep them off. A worn transformer was one of four problems in one Rancho Mirage yard, and fixing all four brought the lights back.

  • 02

    Timers and light sensors

A timer or a light sensor tells the lights when to come on, and both come up on our Rancho Mirage lighting jobs. Tell us when your lights are set to come on, and we'll start there.

  • 03

    The circuit's protection

The circuit's GFCI (Shock Prevention) Protection cuts the power when it trips, and the lights go out with it. On our Rancho Mirage jobs, it has tripped with the lights running, and in one yard it had failed.

  • 04

    Wiring buried in the yard

At a 1983 Rancho Mirage home, a tripped breaker cut power to the backyard lights and the garage, and the garage door wouldn't open. The buried wiring feeding the lights had failed. We disconnected that circuit so the breaker would hold, and the garage had power again. That wiring is the home's own, not the utility's.

The fix starts with finding which part gave out.

Know the Difference

Is the Problem Out in the Yard or at the Outlet and Breaker?

A landscape lighting problem can sit out in the yard or back at the outlet and breaker that power the lights. In the yard, it's the transformer, connections or fixtures; at the outlet and breaker, it's the protection, the cover or a breaker that won't hold. At Rancho Mirage homes, we've seen both, so we check from the panel out.

  • Fixtures, including ones on a hillside or by a lake

Worth a Call First

What Lighting Trouble Should Rancho Mirage Owners Call About?

  • Protection that trips while the lights are on
  • An outdoor outlet cover left open, or one not rated for outdoor use
  • A breaker that cuts the garage along with the lights

Call us about any of these at your Rancho Mirage home, since each points to the power behind the lights rather than the bulbs. If water has gotten into an outdoor outlet, leave the lights off for now. It helps to know when they last worked.

What to Expect

How Do We Get Rancho Mirage Landscape Lights Working Again?

At your Rancho Mirage home, we start at the breaker and follow the power to the last fixture.
