Can Rancho Mirage Homeowners Get a Rebate From the City’s Power Program for an EV Charger or Battery?

Yes. The Rancho Mirage Energy Authority (RMEA), the city's own power program, has rebates for enrolled homeowners, and homes on Edison are enrolled unless they opt out. They can cover a Level 2 charger with Wi-Fi or a home battery, permanently installed. At one Rancho Mirage home, the Level 2 charger we put in ended a car's charging errors.

Who the Rebates Are For

Which Rancho Mirage Homeowners Can Get the Power Program's Rebates?

The rebates are for homeowners enrolled in the Rancho Mirage Energy Authority (RMEA), the city's own power program. If your home is on Southern California Edison (SCE), you're already enrolled unless you opted out. Opting out gives the rebates up. We can look at the charger or battery you want against the program's terms.

Own the home, stay enrolled, and choose equipment that's installed for good.

A travel charger behind the errors

When a car at a 2017 Rancho Mirage home kept showing low-voltage and charging errors, the circuit and outlet it used checked out fine. The trouble was a plug-in travel charger five or six years old. We put in a permanent Level 2 charger on its own breaker, and the car charged the way it should.

The Program's Terms

Which Terms Decide a Rancho Mirage Charger or Battery Rebate?

Four terms decide a Rancho Mirage rebate for a charger or battery: where your home is, your household's past rebates, the funding and the permit. The Rancho Mirage Energy Authority (RMEA) funds these rebates itself, for its enrolled homeowners. We'll go over each one with you before you buy.

On IID, a different charger rebate

RMEA's rebates are for enrolled homeowners, and homes in the part of the city the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) serves can't enroll. For homes served by IID, its ReCharge program has its own Level 2 charger rebate. IID's charger rebate page

One charger, one battery per household

The charger and battery rebates each come once per household, so a second charger later won't get one. Developers and contractors building homes for resale aren't eligible. RMEA's rebates for enrolled homeowners

    Funding isn't guaranteed

A permit, which may not be needed if the home is pre-wired

Under the program's guidelines, a charger in a home already pre-wired for one may not need a permit. Otherwise the work takes a city permit. The Building and Safety Division issues it once its EV checklist is complete, unless the job needs a closer look for safety. The charger program's form

Know the Difference

How Is the Battery Rebate Different From the Charger Rebate in Rancho Mirage?

The battery rebate asks more of the equipment and waits on the city. For a battery, the rebate counts the work as complete only when the city's permit is finalized. For a charger, the date of purchase can count instead. The program's solar rebate ended in October 2024.

The charger rebate
  • A Level 2 charger with Wi-Fi
  • Permanently installed, unlike a plug-in travel charger
  • Complete when its permit is finalized, or on the date of purchase

The battery rebate
  • A battery permanently installed and fully tied into the home's electrical system
  • With demand response capability, so it can lean less on the grid at peak times
  • Complete only when the city finalizes its permit

With a battery, plan on the city's permit as part of the rebate.

Worth a Call First

What Should a Rancho Mirage Owner Do Before Replacing a Charger?

  • Low-voltage or charging errors that keep coming back
  • A charger on a circuit that also feeds other equipment
  • A charger that has lost its Wi-Fi connection
  • A plug-in travel charger that's several years old

Before you replace a charger at your Rancho Mirage home, call us to check the circuit behind it. The trouble can sit in the charger or in the circuit it runs on, and the two take different fixes. If a new charger is the fix, we'll tell you what the rebate asks of it.

What to Expect

How Do We Size Up a Rancho Mirage Panel for a Charger or Battery?

We start with the panel your charger or battery would tie into at your Rancho Mirage home, and the circuit it would run on. The price depends on that circuit and on what the panel needs. Once a charger is in, we make sure your car charges properly, leave the space tidy and point out its breaker.

  1. 01

    We evaluate first.

We check your main panel, the circuit a new charger or battery would use and, if you have one, the charger you use now.

  2. 02

    We explain the situation.

We tell you whether your panel has room for the equipment as it stands, and which of the program's terms touch your job, from a charger's Wi-Fi to the city's permit.

  3. 03

We give you the price before any work begins.

Our $99 service fee covers the time we need to evaluate the situation, the available options, and guaranteed pricing before any work begins. Every decision about what happens next belongs to you.

  4. 04

    Then you decide.

We'll explain what we see and walk you through your options. You decide what fits your home.
